Fella, Permata Hati (2026). An Analysis of the Tenth Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability of Recount Text At SMA N 17 Padang
Advisor: Dra. Ernati, M.Pd
This research aimed to analyze the tenth grade students‟ reading comprehension ability of recount texts at SMA N 17 Padang, particularly in comprehending the idea of the generic structure consisting of orientation, events, and re-orientation. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design to describe students‟ ability based on factual data obtained from the field. The population of this research consisted of 145 tenth grade students of SMA N 17 Padang, and the sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique, in which class E2, consisting of 34 students, was chosen as the sample. The instrument used to collect the data was a multiple-choice reading comprehension test consisting of 35 items covering questions related to the generic structure of recount texts. The students‟ reading comprehension ability were classified based on the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM=79) at SMAN 17 Padang to determine their level of achievement.
The findings indicated that the students‟ overall reading comprehension ability of recount texts was categorized as low. There were 10 students (29%) who were classified as having high ability, while 24 students (71%) were classified as having low ability. In detail, the students‟ ability in comprehending the orientation, events, and re-orientation parts was also categorized as low, with 56% students have low ability in comprehending orientation, 79% students have low ability in comprehending event, 74% students have low ability in comprehending re-orientation.
It can be concluded that the students have low ability in comprehending recount text. Based on the conclusion, the teachers are suggested to give motivation and more exercises to students to improve their ability in reading recount text. For the students, they are suggested to do more exercises in reading recount text to improve their ability in reading recount text. Students who have high ability are suggested to maintain their ability in reading recount text. For future researchers, it is suggested to learn more about recount text and find out the factors that causes at SMAN 17 Padang students ability in comprehending recount text was low.
